LGBT

As your Representative, I will fight for equal opportunity and equal rights for ALL Americans. I support the LGBT community. I proudly stand for full civil rights and equality, and am against discrimination of any kind. I fervently believe all families deserve our respect no matter their race, creed or sexual orientation. Same-sex marriage is a "wedge" issue. However matters concerning the LGBT community are far more complex than "marriage," and my views of inclusion are not limited to how we choose to define marriage. I will push for full recognition, equality, and civil rights; supporting all inclusion and diversity policies.

I support ending the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.

Gay, lesbian, and transgender families deserve respect, and as your Representative, I will take a principled stand to fight for it. I strongly believe that we don't need constitutional amendments designed to exclude supportive, devoted couples. We need to extend the rights due to all of us as Americans:

  • The right to visit a sick or dying partner in the hospital,
  • The right to make necessary legal and financial decisions when a partner cannot,
  • The right to equal employment opportunity, and
  • The right to protection from violent prejudice.

I support Equal Rights for Same-Sex Couples.

I believe that all couples in committed, long-term relationships should have the same rights, benefits, and responsibilities, whether they are straight couples or same-sex couples. I support both civil unions and legal marriage (not requiring religious groups to bless a same-sex union in holy matrimony) to guarantee gay and lesbian couples the same rights as straight couples, including inheritance rights, hospital visitation rights, equal pension and health care benefits, and all of the 1,100 other legal protections government affords straight married couples. I support the full repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. I also believe same-sex families should be treated in the same manner as other families by our immigration laws. I believe we should lead the country toward consensus around equal rights for all and therefore benefits for all couples in committed, long-term relationships and I oppose divisive Constitutional amendments to ban same-sex marriages.

I will continue the fight for civil liberties and equal rights for all families, regardless of their race, religion, creed, sexual orientation, or wherever else discrimination is found.
